Led Zeppelin - Black dog

1973 Live Concert

Black Dog Lyric

Hey, hey, mama, said the way you move, Gonna make you sweat,
gonna make you groove. Ah, ah, child, way you shake that thing
Gonna make you burn, gonna make you sting
Hey, hey, baby, when you walk that way,
Watch your honey drip, can't keep away.
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh, oh, oh Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh, oh, oh
I gotta roll, can't stand still, Got a flamin' heart,
can't get my fill, Eyes that shine burning red,
Dreams of you all through my head
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah...
Hey baby, oh baby, pretty baby, Tell me what you do me now
Hey baby, oh baby, pretty baby, Tell me what you do me now
Didn't take too long b'fore I found out
What people mean by down and out
Spent my money, took my car,
Started tellin' her friends she' goin' be a star
I don't know, but I've been told A Big legged woman ain't got no soul
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh, oh, ah Oh yeah,
oh yeah, oh, oh, ah All I ask for, when I pray,
Steady rollin' of woman gonna come my way
need a woman gonna hold my hand
tell me no lies, makes me a happy man
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah...

Song Note: "The title came from a nameless black dog that wandered around the Headley Grange studios during recording. It has nothing to do with the song itself."

"Zeppelin bass player John Paul Jones got the idea for this song after hearing Muddy Waters' 'Electric Mud' He wanted to try 'Electric Blues with a rolling bass part.' "

"This is the first track on Led Zeppelin 4, one of the best selling albums ever. The album has symbols on the cover and is untitled, but since it was their 4th album, it became known as Led Zeppelin 4. This is the first Led Zeppelin track where Jones had as much a part of the songwriting as Robert Plant."

Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song

1972 Live Concert

Immigrant Song Lyric

Ah, ah, We come from the land of the ice and snow,
from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying
Valhalla, I am coming!On
We sweep with threshing oar,
Our only goal will be the western shore
Ah, ah, We come from the land of the ice and snow,
from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow
How soft your fields so green,Can whisper tales of gore,
Of how we calmed the tides of war. We are your overlords.
On we sweep with threshing oar,
Our only goal will be the western shore
So now youd better stop and rebuild all your ruins,
For peace and trust can win the day
Despite of all your losing

Song Note : "The 'Land of ice and snow' is Iceland, where the band played in June, 1970."

"One of the lyrics became part of Led Zeppelin lore. The line, 'The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands' got many of their fans referring to Zeppelin's sound as the "Hammer of the gods'. "

"One of the lyrics is 'Valhalla I am coming'. It refers to Norse Mythology. Valhalla is a hall in Asgard where the souls of fallen warriors are taken by the 'Valkyries,' which are spirits of war who carry up heroes who have been slain. Only heroes are taken to Valhalla, where they will wait for their certain doom."

Led Zeppelin - Over the Hill and Far Away

Over The Hill and Far Away Lyric

Hey lady, you've got the love I need Maybe,
more than enough. Oh Darling Darling Darling,
walk a while with me Oh you've got
so much... So much... So much...
Many times I've loved , And many times been bitten
Many times I've gazed along the open road
Many times I've lied. Many times I've listened
Many times I've wondered how much there is to know
Many dreams come true and some have silver linings
I live for my dream and a pocketful of gold
Mellow is the man who knows what he's been missing
Many many men can't see the open road
Many is a word that only leaves you guessing
Guessing 'bout a thing you really ought to know,
ooh! You really ought to know...
I really ought to know...

Song Title : "This evolved from the Yardbirds song 'White Summer,' an acoustic solo by Jimmy Page. Many of the same riffs and chords are in it. After The Yardbirds broke up, Led Zeppelin continued to play 'White Summer' live."

"Page and Plant started writing this in 1970 at Bron-yr-Aur, the cottage in Wales they went to after a grueling US tour. It had no electricity or running water. "

Led Zeppelin - Going to California

Going to California Lyric

Spent my days with a woman unkind,
Smoked my stuff and drank all my wine
Made up my mind to make a new start,
Going to california with an aching in my heart
Someone told me theres a girl out there
With love in her eyes and flowers in her hair
Took my chances on a big jet plane,
Never let them tell you that they're all the same
The sea was red and the sky was grey,
Wondered how tomorrow could ever follow today
The mountains and the canyons started to tremble and shake
As the children of the sun began to awake
Seems that the wrath of the gods Got a punch on the nose
and it started to flow, I think I might be sinking
Throw me a line if I reach it in time I'll meet you up there
where the path runs straight and high
To find a queen without a king
They say she plays guitar and cries and sings
La la la la Ride a white mare in the foot steps of dawn
Tryin to find a woman whos never, never, never been born
Standing on a hill in my mountain of dreams,
Telling myself its not as hard, hard, hard as it seems

Song Note : "The original title was 'Guide To California.' "

"This came from a poem Jimmy Page wrote on a notebook. He found it awhile later and branched off from there."

"This was inspired by Joni Mitchell's 'California'. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were huge fans of hers. When performed live, after the lines 'To find the queen without a king they say she plays guitar and cries and sings,' Plant would often say the name 'Joni'. "

"This was part of Led Zeppelin's fourth album, which was untitled. The album was often called 'ZoSo,' which was Jimmy Page's sign, or 'Led Zeppelin 4'. The symbols were put in due to the lack of a title for the album. "

Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven

Stairway To Heaven Lyric

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for Ooh, ooh,
and she's buying a stairway to heaven
There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings
In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven Ooh,
it makes me wonder Ooh, it makes me wonder
There's a feeling I get when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking
and it makes me wonder, really makes me wonder
And it's whispered that soon if we all call the
tune Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forest will echo with laughter

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May Queen
Yes,there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run,
There's still time to change the road you're on
Ooh, it makes me wonder Ooh, Ooh, it makes me wonder
Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady, can't you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all is one and one is all, yeah
To be a rock and not to roll
And she's buying the stairway to heaven

Song Note : "Robert and Jimmy wrote this in an old mansion called Headley Grange in Liphook Road, Headley, Hampshire, where Led Zeppelin recorded most of their 4th album. It was a huge, old, dusty mansion with no electricity but great acoustics. Bands would go there to get some privacy and focus on songwriting. One night, in front of a roaring fire, Page strummed the chords to this for Robert. Plant wrote 90% of the lyrics right there in front of the fire. He has said in many interviews that he didn't seem to be writing, that something else was moving his pencil for him. Plant is a great admirer of all things mystic, the old English legends and lore and the writings of the Celts. He was immersed in The Lord Of The Rings around this time and many of his lyrics reflect that"

The Doors - The End

The End Lyric

This is the end Beautiful friend This is the end My only friend,
the end Of our elaborate plans, the end of everything that stands,
the end No safety or surprise, the end I’ll never look into your eyes again
Can you picture what we’ll be, So limitless and free?
Desperately in need of some stranger’s hand in a desperate landLost
in a Roman Wilderness of pain And all the children are insane
All the children are insane Waiting for the summer rain,
yeah There’s danger on the edge of town. Ride the king’s highway
Weird scenes inside the gold mine. Ride the highway west,
Baby, Ride the snake Ride the snake To the lake The ancient lake,
Baby the snake he’s long Seven miles Ride the snake
He’s old and his skin is cold. The west is the best, The west is the best.
Get here, and we’ll do the rest. Da blue bus is calling us
The blue bus is calling us. Driver where you takin’ us?
The killer awoke before dawn. He put his boots on.
He took a face from the ancient gallery and he walked on down the hall,
And he went into the room where his sister lived And… then
he… paid a visit to his brother, and then he…He walked on down the hall,
yeah and he came to a door, and he looked inside Father?
“Yes son?”I want to kill you…Mother? I want to… fuck you all night
yeah, Come on, yeah Come on baby, take a chance with us, Come on baby,
take a chance with us, Come on baby, take a chance with us
and Meet me at the back of the blue bus
Doin’ a blue rock On the blue bus, Doin’ a blue rockCome on, yeahFuck, fuck
yeahFuck, fuck, fuck fuck fuck yeahCome on baby,Fuck me baby, fuck yeah, Hey,
fuckfuckFuck… yeah Fuck me, yeah Come on baby, fuck me baby Fuck fuck,
whoah, whoah, yeahYeah, fuck yeah, Come on, huh huh huh yeah,
All right…Kill… kill… kill… kill…kill… kill… kill
This is the end Beautiful friend This is the end My only friend, the end
It hurts to set you free, But you’ll never follow me The end of laughter
And soft lies, The end of nights we tried to die, This is the end

Song Note : "The Doors developed this during live performances at the Whiskey-A-Go-Go, a Los Angeles club where they were the house band in 1966. They had to play 2 sets a night, so they were forced to extend their songs in order to fill the sets. This gave them a chance to experiment with their songs. This started as a short song about a farewell to a girl, and developed into an 11 minute epic."

"One night, Morrison didn't show up for his gig as the Whiskey-A-Go-Go. After their first set, the band retrieved Morrison from his apartment, where he had been tripping on acid. They always played this as the last song, but Morrison decided to play it early in the set, and the band went along. When they got to the part where Morrison could do a spoken improvisation, he started talking about a killer, and said, "Father, I want to kill you. Mother, I want to f--k you!" The crowd went nuts, but they were fired right after the show. The Doors had recently signed a record deal and they had established a large following, so getting fired from the Whiskey was not a crushing blow."

"This is supposedly the last song Morrison heard. The night he died, he was playing old Doors albums, ending with this one. This was the last song on that album."

The Doors - Light My Fire

Light My Fire Lyric

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn't get much higher
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire,
yeah The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire, yeah
You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you Girl,
we couldn't get much higher
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire

Song Note : "Most of the lyrics were written by Doors guitarist Robbie Krieger. He wanted to write about one of the elements: fire, air, earth, and water. Jim Morrison wrote some of the second verse, and Ray Manzarek came up with the organ intro."

"Before this was released, The Doors were an underground band popular in the Los Angeles area. This got the attention of a mass audience. This song became The Doors' signature song. After this song Released on their first album, it was a huge hit and launched them to stardom."

"Jim Morrison indicated in his notebooks that he despised this song and hated performing it. He also seemed to resent that the popularity of the band derived from this song, which he had just a small part writing."
