Nirvana - Penny Royal Tea Unplugged

Penny Royal Tea Lyric

I'm on my time with everyone
I have very bad posture

Sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea
Distill the life that's inside of me
Sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea
I'm anemic royalty

Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld
So I can sigh enternally

I'm so tired I can't sleep
I'm a liar and a thief
Sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea
I'm anemic royalty

I'm on warm milk and laxatives
Cherry-flavored antacids

Song Note : "This song is about making a tough decision, the difficult choices around it, and the guilt following it"

"Pennyroyal Tea can induce an abortion when drunk in large quantities. Due to its toxicity, however, drinking a lot of it is very dangerous"

"Nirvana played this on their MTV Unplugged special, which was recorded shortly before Kurt Cobain killed himself. The album was released about 6 months after his death, and went to #1 in both the UK and US"

"This was the only song during the MTV Unplugged performance that Kurt Cobain played solo, a decision which might have been made at the last minute given the dialogue by Cobain right before he starts playing"

"The reference to laxatives and cherry-flavored antacids implies the song is about heroin addiction. Many junkies have laxatives around to combat the chronic constipation that opiates bring"

"The lyrics could be Kurt thinking he's a lazy, weak figurehead who is depressed and sad and wants a new life. Some lyric analysis:"I'm on my time with everyone" - He was usually late for interviews."I have very bad posture" - He was always teased about being skinny."Sit and drink pennyroyal tea" - This could be a drug he took to calm his stomach pains, but it is also a play on words with penny royalty, meaning a cheap figure head."Distill the life that's inside of me" - He wants to cleanse his life and start fresh"

"The line, "I'm on warm milk and laxatives." could be about Cobain's dependence on DXM, scientifically known as dextromethorphan, which is available in most drug stores. As a result of consuming so much DXM (in the form of Robotussin), he developed stomach pains. One of the long term affects from this is the deterioration of the kidney and liver. The pain that you get from this physically addicting drug is unimaginable. It drove him to do heroine, which didn't last long so he used other remedies to cure his stomach pain"

Nirvana - Dumb Unplugged

Dumb Lyric

I'm not like them
but I can pretend
the sun is gone
but I have a light
the day is done
but I'm having fun
I think I'm dumb
or maybe just happy
think I'm just happy

my heart is broke
but I have some glue
help me heal
and mend it with you
we float around
and hang out on clouds
then we'll come down
and have a hangover
have a hangover

skin the sun,fall asleep
wish away, soul is cheap
lesson learned, wish me luck
soothe the burn, wake me up

Song Notes : A drug-themed song, this relies on the theory that "Ignorance is bliss." Kurt Cobain compares repairing a broken heart with inhaling "glue."

"The lyrics, "Skin the sun, fall asleep, wish away, the soul is cheap, lesson learned, wish me luck, soothe the burn, wake me up" equate to how it feels so good to fall asleep in the sun, never mind the consequences of sunburn as in the consequences of a passionate relationship or drug use"

"The most noticeable drug reference is, "My heart is broke, but i have some glue. Help me inhale, and mend it with you," meaning getting over a heartbreak with the high from glue and maybe finding a drug buddy with it"

"Along with some other In Utero songs, many fans heard bootleg versions of this long before the album came out. At the Reading Festival in August 1992, this became clear when the audience started singing along"

Nirvana - Scentless Apprentice

Scentless Apprentice Lyric

Like most babies smell like butter
His smell smelled like no other
He was born scentless and senseless
He was born a scentless apprentice

Go away - get away, get a-way

Every wet nurse refused to feed him
Electrolytes smell like semen
I promise not to sell your perfumed secrets
There are countless formulas for pressing flowers

Go away - get away, get a-way

I lie in the soll and fertilize mushrooms
Leaking out gas fumes are made into perfume
You can't fire me because I quit!
Throw me in the fire and I won't throw a fit

Go away - get away, get away, get away, get away, get away, get a-way

Song Notes : "This song was inspired by the novel Perfume by Patrick Suskind, about a man born with an amazing sense of smell but no smell of his own. He was an apprentice in a perfume shop and becomes a murderer of young girls for their scent"

"A 9 minute version appears on Nirvana's With The Lights Out compilation"

"This song is credited to all 3 members of the band. As Kurt Cobain said in interviews around the time In Utero was released, Dave Grohl came up with the drum beat and the guitar riff for the song. All 3 members worked to refine the song and Kurt wrote the lyrics. Cobain also said he preferred having input from the other 2 to take the pressure off of him to come up with all the songs. He said he was looking forward to more collaboration like that in the future, a collaboration that sadly never came to fruition"

Nirvana - Breed

Breed Lyric

I don't care, I don't care, I don't care, I don't care, care,
care if it's old.
I don't mind, I don't mind, I don't mind, I don't mind, mind,
don't have a mind.
Get away, get away, get away, get away, away,
away from your home.
I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid,
afraid of ghosts!

Even if you have, even if you need.
I don't mean to stare, we don't have to breed.
We can plant a house, we can build a tree.
I don't even care, we can have all three,
she said. (said) She said. (said) She said. (said) She said. (said)
She said. (said) She said. (said) She said. (said) She said.

Even if you have, even if you need.
I don't mean to stare, we don't have to breed.
We can plant a house, we can build a tree.
I don't even care, we can have all three,
she said. (said) She said. (said) She said. (said) She said. (said)
She said. (said) She said. (said) She said. (said) She said. (said)
She said. Dur....

Song Notes : "This is about growing up and being trapped in middle-class America"

"Kurt Cobain wrote this when he was first starting to more deeply explore his songwriting talent, and he had begun to write about the people around him. The original version was recorded at Smart Studios with Butch Vig, and it was the most complex song of the session: it began under the title "Immodium" - named after a friend's diarrhea medicine, yet there is very little in the version recorded at Smart to connect it with the medicine. Kurt instead used the title to suggest the running-on of the mouth. It was much more complex than much of Nirvana's early material, each chorus beginning and ending with the line "she said," implying that the song was meant to capture spoken dialogue, which is often overlooked"

Nirvana - Lithium

Lithium Lyric

I'm so happy,'cause today I found my friends.
They're in my head. I'm so ugly,
that's okay, 'cause so are you.
We've broken our mirrors. Sunday morning
is every day for all I care,
and I'm not scared. Light my candles
in a daze 'cause I found God.

Yeah yeah! Yeah...

I'm so lonely,
that's okay, I shaved my head,
and I'm not sad. And just maybe,
I'm to blame for all I've heard,
but I'm not sure. I'm so excited,
I can't wait to meet you there,
and I don't care. I'm so horny,
that's okay, my will is good.

Yeah yeah! Yeah...

I like it, I'm not gonna crack.
I miss you, I'm not gonna crack.
I love you, I'm not gonna crack.
I kill you, I'm not gonna crack.
I like it, I'm not gonna crack.
I miss you, I'm not gonna crack.
I love you, I'm not gonna crack.
I kill you, I'm not gonna crack.

I'm so happy, cause today I found my friends.
They're in my head. I'm so ugly,
that's okay 'cause so are you.
We've broken our mirrors.
Sunday morning, is everyday for all I care.
and I'm not scared. Light my candles
in a daze, 'cause I found God.

Yeah yeah! Yeah!

Song Notes : " 'Lithium,' viewed by many, is about a man on the brink of killing himself - dysfunctional, random, and all of that. It is very important, however, not to read too much into Kurt Cobain's lyrics. Listening to live shows, many songs contain altered lyrics that just sound like other words, which was one of the more unique things about Nirvana"

"Lithium is a drug used by doctors and psychiatrists to treat patients with Manic-Depressive Disorder, also known as Bipolar Depression. This is a very volatile mental condition, and Lithium often helps regulate the mood of the patient. Mike Tyson is a famous Lithium patient"

"The album was produced by Butch Vig. He also produced the Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream and is the drummer for the band Garbage"

"Cobain spent a period of his life moving between the homes of various relatives and friends. One of these friends came from a family of reformed Christians, and in this song Cobain compares living in this house to having bi-polar depression"

Living Color guitarist Vernon Reid told Rolling Stone magazine: "My favorite song on Nevermind was 'Lithium.' Kurt Cobain tapped into something in the culture that nobody had given a voice to before: passionate ambivalence: 'I'm so ugly, but that's OK 'cause so are you.' He captured the idea of having incredibly powerful feelings about not having feelings."

Nirvana - Come As You Are

Music Video

Come As You Are Lyric

Come as you are, as you were
As I want you to be
As a friend, as a friend, as an old enemy
Take your time, hurry up
The choice is yours, don't be late
Take a rest as a friend as an old memoria

Memoria Memoria Memoria Memoria

Come dowsed in mud, soaked in bleach
As I want you to be
As a trend, as a friend, as an old memoria

Memoria Memoria Memoria Memoria

And I swear that I don't have a gun
No I don't have a gun No I don't have a gun

Memoria Memoria Memoria Memoria

And I swear that I don't have a gun
No I don't have a gun No I don't have a gun
No I don't have a gun No I don't have a gun
Memoria Memoria

Song Notes : "This could be about not being judgmental when someone changes after you haven't seen them for a long time. In hindsight, it can be seen as a song about suicide, since lead singer Kurt Cobain committed suicide less than three years after this was released"

"The chords in this song are a slowed down replica of Killing Joke's 1985 song "Eighties." The songs were so similar that Nirvana considered holding off releasing this as a single. Killing Joke decided not to sue Nirvana, and in 1992, Dave Grohl helped them out by playing drums for them on an album"

"Cobain sings over and over, "And I swear that I don't have a gun." He committed suicide by shooting himself in the head"

The lyrics, "Come doused in mud, soaked in bleach" were taken from a campaign in Seattle that encouraged heroin users to soak their needles in bleach after injecting to reduce the risk of spreading HIV. The phrase for the campaign was actually "If doused in mud, soak in bleach." The lyrics as used by Cobain could be about tolerating everyone no matter what they look like - black people being the "mud" and white people being the "bleach."

"Nirvana almost named the album "Sheep," a reference to people who follow the herd"

The line, "Take your time, hurry up, the choice is yours, don't be late" is referenced in blink-182's "Adam's Song" when they sing, "I took my time, I hurried up, the choice was mine I didn't think enough."

"The cover of Nevermind shows a baby underwater reaching for a dollar bill. It symbolizes that you're taught to go after money from the moment you're born. It was underwater because underwater birth fascinated Kurt"

One interpretation of this song is that it's about heroin:"Come doused in mud, served in bleach, as I want you to be" - Drugs are cut with all kinds of rubbish."As a friend, as a trend, as a known enemy" - Drugs can make you feel good, like a friend. There's a trend with them, but they are bad (thus, "as a known enemy.")"Well I swear that I don't have a gun" - A gun could mean a syringe. Cobain also mentions a gun in 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.""Load up on guns, bring your friends its fun to lose and to pretend" - Losing could mean giving in to drugs, and feeling high is to pretend

Nirvana - Heart Shaped Box

Music Video

Heart Shaped Box Lyric

She eyes me like a Pisces when I am weak
I've been locked inside your Heart-Shaped box for a week
I was drawn into your magnet tar pit trap
I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn back

Hey
Wait
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hate
Haight
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey
Wait
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice

Meat-eating orchids forgive no one just yet
Cut myself angel's hair and baby's breath
Broken hymen of your highness I'm left black
Throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back

Song Notes : "Kurt Cobain claimed that this song was inspired by a television report of children suffering from cancer. However, many believe it was really written about his shaky but passionate relationship with his wife, Courtney Love. The lyrics do tend towards this latter interpretation, since they seem to concern themselves with an unstable romance between two individuals. It's worth noting that the lyrics mention Pisces and Cancer, Cobain's and Love's respective astrological signs. Love, after their second meeting sent a small heart-shaped box, containing, among other things, a doll's head, to his hotel room. This is believed to have inspired the song's title. Cobain and Love both shared a love and fascination of dolls"

"The "Heart-Shaped Box" could be a reference to a uterus. The lyrics talk about the situation of an aborted fetus from the first-person viewpoint"

"There are many possible interpretations for the "Heart-Shaped Box." It could be a box for Kurt's needles, an actual heart, or a box of love letters. There is no clear explanation, which was probably what Cobain had in mind"

"According to the book Come As You Are by Michael Azerrad, the idea of the song came from Courtney Love when she presented Kurt with a heart-shaped box full of precious possessions. The song switches meanings between Kurt's feelings over Courtney and his feelings on how women are treated"

"The lyrics, "Throw down your umbilical noose so i can climb right back" is Cobain's way of saying that he wants to climb back into his mother's womb and restart his life"

"The video is rather odd and depicts a little girl in what seems to be a Ku Klux Klan uniform and an old man with a Santa hat on dressed like Jesus and tying himself to a cross. It also shows a rather large woman wearing a suit of meat for the verse "meat eating orchids forgive no one just yet." Later in the video her uniform turns black and she tries to snatch unborn babies from a tree"

Nirvana - In Bloom

In Bloom Lyric

Sell the kids for food.
Weather changes moods.
Spring is here again.
Reproductive glands.

He's the one who likes
all our pretty songs and he
likes to sing along and he
likes to shoot his gun, but he
don't know what it means,
don't know what it means, and I say
He's the one who likes
all our pretty songs and he
likes to sing along and he
likes to shoot his gun, but he
don't know what it means,
don't know what it means, and I say yeah.

We can have some more.
Nature is a whore.
Bruises on the fruit.
Tender age in bloom.

He's the one who likes
all our pretty songs and he
likes to sing along and he
likes to shoot his gun, but he
don't know what it means,
don't know what it means, and I say
He's the one who likes
all our pretty songs and he
likes to sing along and he
likes to shoot his gun, but he
don't know what it means,
don't know what it means, and I say yeah.

He's the one who likes
all our pretty songs and he
likes to sing along and he
likes to shoot his gun, but he
don't know what it means,
don't know what it means, and I say
He's the one who likes
all our pretty songs and he
likes to sing along and he
likes to shoot his gun, but he
don't know what it means,
don't know what it means, and I say yeah.

Song Notes : "Kurt Cobain wrote this about Dylan Carlson, one of his most reliable friends throughout his life. The topic is often misinterpreted as Kurt's stab at a broader range of people similar to Carlson"

"Kurt wore the glasses in the video (which won an MTV Music Video Award for Best Alternative Video) to make him appear more intelligent"

"Cobain once said in an interview this song is about people who write lyrics, but have no clue what their writing means. This could also be about people who do things without thinking about what their actions mean, yet are contented by that"

"There are 4 different videos for this song. The first was made by a film student in 1990 before the band was famous. The other 3 are different edits of the same footage. In one, the band is wearing suits, in another, they are wearing dresses, and in the one MTV usually played, they are wearing a suits in some shots and dresses in others. These 3 videos are parodies of the old variety shows like The Ed Sullivan Show. Just like the show, they were filmed in black and white, include footage of a crowd of screaming girls, and feature a host who mispronounces the name of the band"

Weird Al Yankovich - Smell like Nirvana

Nirvana - Smell Like Teen Spirit

Music Video

Smell Like Teen Spirit Lyric

Load up on guns and bring your friends
It's fun to lose and to pretend
She's over bored and self assured
And all I know are dirty words

Hello, hello, hello, how low?
Hello, hello, hello!

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto An albino A mosquito My libido Yay!

I'm worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end

Hello, hello, hello, how low?
Hello, hello, hello!

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto An albino A mosquito My libido Yay!

And I forget just why I taste
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard, it's hard to find
Oh well, whatever, nevermind

Hello, hello, hello, how low?
Hello, hello, hello!

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto An albino A mosquito My libido
A denial!

Song Notes :

Kurt Cobain: "I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off The Pixies."

"Cobain wrote this for Nirvana. It came together in a jam session when he played it for the band"

"Kathleen Hanna, the lead singer of the group Bikini Kill, gave Cobain the idea for the title when she spray painted "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" on his bedroom wall after a night of drinking and spraying graffiti around the Seattle area. In his pre-Courtney Love days, Cobain went out with Bikini Kill lead singer Tobi Vail, but she dumped him. Vail wore Teen Spirit deodorant, and Hanna was implying that Cobain was marked with her scent"

"Cobain didn't know it when he wrote the song, but Teen Spirit is a brand of deodorant marketed to young girls. Kurt thought Hanna was complimenting him on his rebellious spirit. Sales of Teen Spirit deodorant shot up when this became a hit, even though it is never mentioned in the lyrics"

"This was the first "Alternative" song to become a huge hit. Since "alternative" implies lack of popularity, people started referring to the genre as "Modern Rock." It helped ignite the "grunge" craze, characterized by loud guitars, angst-ridden lyrics, and flannel"

"The group hated the video, but everyone else loved it. The concept was "Pep Rally from Hell." The cheerleaders were strippers"

"Two days before shooting the video, the band played a show at The Roxy Theater in Los Angeles where they invited everyone to come by the shoot and be in the video. The shoot, which took place at Culver City Studios in California, took 8 hours, so they had no problem getting the kids to come out of the bleachers and form a mosh pit at the end of the day"

"The video was inspired by the movie and song Rock And Roll High School by the Ramones. At the end of the video, when the band and the teenagers smash the set, it is real. The band and the teenagers had began getting mad after being on set for over 8 hours, and one of the teenagers asked if everyone could destroy the set. The producer said yes, so they destroyed it"

"The girls who played the cheerleaders in the video were originally supposed to be very fat and unattractive (Cobain's idea). The Director did not like this idea, but still allowed the cheerleaders to have "sleeve" tattoos and the symbol for anarchy on their shirts"

"Weird Al Yankovic did a parody of this called "Smells Like Nirvana." He shot his video in the same gym with the same janitor, but in his video, the janitor was wearing a tutu. Cobain said he was "flattered" by the parody: "I loved, it, it was really amusing"
