Creedence Clear Water Revival - Traveling Band

Traveling Band Lyric

Seven Thirty Seven comin' out of the sky.
Oh! Won't you take me down to Memphis on a midnight ride,
I wanna move.

Playin' in a Travelin' Band. Yeah!
Well, I'm flyin' 'cross the land, try'in' to get a hand,
Playin' in a Travelin' Band.

Take me to the hotel, Baggage gone, oh, well.
Come on, come on, won't you get me to my room,
I wanna move.

Listen to the radio, Talkin' 'bout the last show.
Someone got excited, Had to call the State Militia,
Wanna move.

Oh! WOW!

Here we come again on a Saturday night
Oh with your fussin' and your fightin'
Won't you get me to there right,
I wanna move.

Oh! WOW!

Oh! I'm playin' in a Travelin' Band
Playin' in a Travelin' Band.
Won't you give us all a hand
Well, I'm playin' in a Travelin' Band,
Well, I'm flyin' 'cross the land.
Tryin' to get a hand,
Playin' in a Travelin' Band, OH! WOW!

Hey!

Creedence Clear Water Revival - Bad Moon Rising

Bad Moon Rising Lyric

I see a bad moon arising.
I see trouble on the way.
I see earthquakes and lightnin'.
I see bad times today.

Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

I hear hurricanes a-blowing.
I know the end is coming soon.
I fear rivers overflowing.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.

Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.
All right!

Hope you got your things together.
Hope you are quite prepared to die.
Looks like we're in for nasty weather.
One eye is taken for an eye.

Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

Song Notes : The lyrics were inspired by a movie called The Devil And Daniel Webster, in which a hurricane wipes out most of a town. This is where John Fogerty got the idea for the line "I feel the hurricane blowin', I hope you're quite prepared to die."

This became the theme song of the demonstrators during the People's Park riots in Berkeley, California, in 1969

This contains a classic misheard lyric. The line "There's a bad moon on the rise" is often heard as "There's a bathroom on the right." Not only do many people sing the wrong lyrics, but John Fogerty himself sang the "bathroom on the right" lyric once during the "Premonition" concert. It can be heard after the last verse of the song quite plainly

The music makes this sound like a happy song, but the lyrics are very bleak, describing events that indicate a coming apocalypse

Creedence Clear Water Revival - Sweet Hitch Hiker

Sweet Hitch Hiker Lyric

Was ridin' alongside the highway
Rollin' up the country side
Thinkin' I'm the devil's heatwave
What you burn in your crazy mind
Saw a slight distraction
Standin' by the road
She was smilin' there
Yellow in her hair
Do you wanna, I was thinkin'
Would you care?

Sweet Hitchhiker
We could make music at the Greasy King
Sweet Hitchhiker,
Won't you ride on my fast machine?

Cruisin' on through the junction
I'm flyin' 'bout the speed of sound
Noticin' peculiar function
I ain't no roller coaster
Show me down
I turned away to see her
Whoa, she caught my eye
But I was rollin' down
Movin' too fast
Do you wanna, she was thinkin'
Can it last

Sweet Hitchhiker
We could make music at the Greasy King
Sweet Hitchhiker
Won't you ride on my fast machine

Was busted up along the highway
I'm the saddest ridin' fool alive
Wond'ring if you're goin' in my way
Won't you give a poor boy a ride
Here she comes a ridin'
Lord, she's flyin' high
But she was rollin' down
Movin' too fast
Do you wanna, she was thinkin'
Can I last

Sweet Hitchhiker
We could make music at the Greasy King
Sweet Hitchhiker
Won't you ride on my fast machine

Song Notes : "This was the first CCR album that John Fogerty did not dominate. Other members of the band had accused him of being a control freak, so Fogerty let them do more of the songwriting and have a more prominent role on this album. It was the beginning of the end for CCR, as the album was a flop and this song the last of their hits"

Contains the line "We could make music at the Greasy King." Stu Cook: "The Greasy King was the nickname for the local burger stand near Cosmo's Factory, Berkeley, CA."

"The first single for CCR as a trio. Tom Fogerty left in 1971"

Creedence Clear Water Revival - Fortunate Son (1969 Live)

Fortunate Son Lyric

Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
Ooh, they're red, white and blue.
And when the band plays "Hail to the Chief",
Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord,

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no senator's son, son.
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no,

Yeah!
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand,
Lord, don't they help themselves, oh.
But when the taxman comes to the door,
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yes,

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no millionaire's son, no.
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no.

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord,
And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"
Ooh, they only answer more! more! more! yoh,

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no military son, son.
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, one.

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no no no,
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate son, no no no.

Song Notes : "This is an antiestablishment song of defiance and blue-collar pride, both anti-Washington and against the Vietnam war. John Fogerty and Doug Clifford were both drafted in 1966 and discharged from the army in 1967"

This is one of 3 political songs on the album. The others were "It Came From the Sky" and "Don't Look Now (It Ain't You or Me)"

This spoke out against the war in Vietnam, but was supportive of the soldiers fighting there. Like many CCR fans, most of the soldiers came from the working class, and were there because they didn't have connections who could get them out. It is sung from the perspective of one of these men, who ends up fighting because he is not a "Senator's son."

"Fogerty wrote this in about 20 minutes"

"Fogerty does not own the publishing rights to this. He lost them, along with all the other songs he wrote for CCR, in his contract with Fantasy Records, which the band signed when they were struggling. A guy named Saul Zaentz controls the rights and can use the songs any way he wants, as long as it isn't performed by any member of CCR. Fogerty hates that his song is constantly misused, but has no choice"

Creedence Clear Water Revival - Looking Out My Back Door

Looking Out My Back Door Lyric

Just got home from Illinois,
lock the front door, oh boy
Got to sit down, take a rest on the porch
Imagination sets in, pretty soon I'm singin',

Doo, doo, doo, lookin' out my back door.

There's a giant doing cartwheels,
a statue wearin' high heels
Look at all the happy creatures dancing on the lawn
A dinosaur Victrola listening to Buck Owens

Tambourines and elephants are playing in the band
Won't you take a ride on the flyin' spoon
Doo, doo doo
Wondrous apparition provided by magician

Tambourines and elephants are playing in the band
Won't you take a ride on the flyin' spoon
Doo, doo doo.
Bother me tomorrow, today, I'll buy no sorrows

Forward troubles Illinois, lock the front door, oh boy
Look at all the happy creatures dancing on the lawn
Bother me tomorrow, today, I'll buy no sorrows

Song Notes : "It was partly written for John Fogerty's son Josh who at the time was 3. Fogerty says: "I knew he would love it if he heard me on the radio singing - doot doot doo, lookin' out my back door." In the song lyrics there is a reference to a parade passing by which John says was inspired by a Dr. Seuss book that he read as a kid titled To Think (That) I Saw It On Mulberry Street."

:Much like The Beatles Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, many people thought this was about drugs when it was really an innocent song inspired by a child. According to the drug theory, the "Flying Spoon" was a cocaine spoon, and the crazy animal images were an acid trip. This was even less plausible than the Beatles misinterpretation, since Creedence Clearwater Revival was never into psychedelic drugs"

Tina & Ike Turner - Proud Mary

Creedence Clear Water Revival - Proud Mary

Proud Mary Lyric

Left a good job in the city
Workin' for the man every night and day
And I never lost one minute of sleepin'
Worryin' 'bout the way things might have been

Big wheel, keep on turnin'
Proud Mary, keep on burnin'
Rollin'
Rollin'
Rollin' on the river

Cleaned a lotta plates in Memphis
Pumped a lotta pane down in New Orleans
But I never saw the good side of the city
Until I hitched a ride on the Riverboat Queen

Big wheel, keep on turnin'
Proud Mary, keep on burnin'
Rollin'
Rollin'
Rollin' on the river

If you come down to the river
Bet you gonna find some people who live
You don't have to worry
'Cause ya have no money
People on the river are happy to give

Big wheel, keep on turnin'
Proud Mary, keep on burnin'
Rollin'
Rollin'
Rollin' on the river

Rollin', rollin'...

Song Notes : "The phrase "Proud Mary" reminded John Fogerty of a domestic washerwoman, which is what he started writing the song about. When he wrote the music, the first few chords reminded him of a paddle-wheel going around, and he thought of the Mississippi River. Instead of "Proud Mary" being a clean-up lady, "she" became a boat"

Fogerty wrote the lyrics based on 3 song title ideas- "Proud Mary," "Riverboat," and "Rolling On A River."

"Fogerty carried around a notebook with titles that he thought would make good songs. "Proud Mary" was at the top of the list"

John Fogerty (about how the guitar riff came about): "I don't know where the germ started. I can kind of remember writing the chords at the beginning of the song. Believe it or not, I was playing around with the famous riff from Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. I used to tell people that the song sounds like what it's about. I thought, by the way, that the opening riff sounded just like the wheel at the back of a boat. 'Proud Mary' is not a side-wheeler, it's a stern-wheeler."

This was a #4 hit in the US for Ike and Tina Turner in 1971, and a highlight of their live shows. Tina Turner recalled in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine in 1971 how they came to record this on their Workin' Together album: "When we cut the album, we were lacking a few tunes, so we said 'Well, let's just put in a few things that we're doing on stage. And that's how 'Proud Mary' came about. I had loved it when it first came out. We auditioned a girl and she had sung 'Proud Mary.' This is like 8 months later, and Ike said, 'You know, I forgot all about that tune.' And I said let's do it, but let's change it. So in the car Ike plays the guitar, we just sort of jam. And we just sort of broke into the black version of it. It was never planned to say, 'Well, let's go to the record shop, and I'd like to record this tune by Aretha Franklin'... it's just that we get it for stage, because we give the people a little bit of us and a little bit of what they hear on the radio every day."

Just for Fun

Sid Vicious - My Way

Creedence Clear Water Revival - Green River

Green River Lyric

Well, take me back down
where cool waters flow, yeah.
Let me remember the things I love.
Stoppin' at the log where catfish bite,
Walkin' along the river road at night,
Barefoot girls, dancin' in the moonlight

I can hear the bullfrog callin' me, y'all
Wonder if my rope's still hanging from the tree
Love to kick my feet way down the shallow water,
Shoo fly, dragonfly, get back to your mother
Pick up a flat stone, skip it across Green River

Up at Cody's camp I spent my days, oh
With flat car riders and cross-tie walkers
Old Cody, Junior took me over,
Said, "You're gonna find the world is smould'rin."
And if you get lost, come on home to Green River

Song Notes : Tom Fogerty: Green River is really about this place where I used to go as a kid on Putah Creek, near Winters, California. I went there with my family every year until I was ten. Lot of happy memories there. I learned how to swim there. There was a rope hanging from the tree. Certainly dragonflies, bullfrogs. There was a little cabin we would stay in owned by a descendant of Buffalo Bill Cody. That's the reference in the song to Cody Jr. The actual specific reference, Green River, I got from a soda pop-syrup label. You used to be able to go into a soda fountain, and they had these bottles of flavored syrup. My flavor was called Green River. It was green, lime flavored, and they would empty some out over some ice and pour some of that soda water on it, and you had yourself a Green River.

Creedence Clear Water Revival - Born in The Bayou

Born in The Bayou Lyric

Now, when I just was a little boy,
Standin to my Daddy's knee,
My poppa said "Son, don't let the man get you
And do what he done to me"

I can remember the Fourth of July,
Runnin' through the backwood bare
And I can still hear my old hound dog barkin',
Chasin' down a hoodoo there,
Chasin' down a hoodoo there

Born on the bayou
Born on the bayou
Born on the bayou

Wish I was back on the bayou,
Rollin' with some Cajun Queen.
Wishin' I were a fast freight train,
Just a chooglin' on down to New Orleans

Born on the bayou
Born on the bayou
Born on the bayou

I can remember the Fourth of July,
Runnin' through the backwood bare
And I can still hear my old hound dog barkin',
Chasin' down a hoodoo there,
Chasin' down a hoodoo there

Song Notes : "John Fogerty, who wrote the song, never actually lived on a bayou, and was writing imagining a bayou childhood"

"This was the first song Creedence played in their set at Woodstock in 1969. They were a big part of the festival, performing 11 songs on the second day"

"Fogerty considered this his favorite CCR song. He performed it on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in November 2005"

Creedence Clear Water Revival - Midnight Special

Midnight Special Lyric

Well, you wake up in the mornin'
you hear the work bell ring,
And they march you to the table
to see the same old thing
Ain't no food upon the table,
and no pork up in the pan.
But you better not complain, boy,
you get in trouble with the man

Let the Midnight Special
shine 'er light on me,
Let the Midnight Special
shine 'er light on me,
Let the Midnight Special
shine 'er light on me,
Let the Midnight Special
shine 'er everlovin' light on me

Yonder come miss Rosie,
how in the world did you know
By the way she wears her apron,
and the clothes she wore
Umbrella on her shoulder,
piece of paper in her hand
She come to see the gov'nor,
he wants to free her man

If you're ever in Houston,
well, you better do the right
You better not gamble, there,
you better not fight, at all
Or the sheriff will grab ya
and the boys will bring you down.
The next thing you know, boy,
Oh! You're prison bound

Kansas - Can I tell You (1974 Live)

Can I tell you Lyric

Can I tell you something
Got to tell you one thing
If you expect the freedom
That you say is yours
Prove that you deserve it
Help us to preserve it
Or being free will just be
Words and nothing more

Kansas - Carry On Wayward Son (1976 Live)

Carry On Wayward Son Lyric

Carry on my wayward son
For there'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Now don't you cry no more

Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion
I was soaring ever higher, but I flew too high
Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think I still was a madman
I hear the voices when I'm dreamin'
I can hear them say

Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man, it surely means that I don't know
On a stormy sea of moving emotion
Tossed about, I'm like a ship on the ocean
I set a course for winds of fortune, but I hear the voices say

Carry on, you will always remember
Carry on, nothing equals the splendor
Now your life's no longer empty
Surely heaven waits for you

Song Notes : "This was written by Kansas guitarist Kerry Livgren. According to Livgren, the song was not written to express anything specifically religious, though it certainly expresses spiritual searching and other ideas. People have attributed all sorts of alternative meanings to it, but he suggests taking the song as it is"

"This was the group's first major hit. It remains a staple of Classic Rock radio"

This song can be seen as the continuation of the last song of Kansas' previous album Masque. As stated in the last verse of "The Pinnacle":"I stood where no man goes/ABOVE THE DIN I ROSELife is amusing though we are losingDrowned in tears of awe..."By definition in the Cambridge dictionary, "Din" is a loud unpleasant confused noise which lasts for a long time. The first line of "Carry On Wayward Son" is: "Once I rose above the noise and confusion."

Kansas - Dust In The Wind

Dust In The Wind Lyric

I close my eyes
Only for a moment and the moment's gone
All my dreams
Pass before my eyes, a curiosity

Dust in the wind
All they are is dust in the wind

Same old song
Just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do
Crumbles to the ground
Though we refuse to see

Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind

Ohh...

Now don't hang on
Nothin' lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away
And all your money won't another minute buy

Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind All we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind Everything is dust in the wind
Everything is dust in the wind

Song Notes : "Kansas guitarist Kerry Livgren wrote this after reading a book of Native American poetry. The line that caught his attention was 'For All We Are Is Dust In The Wind'. "

"This is about the true value of material things and success. Livgren was doing very well with Kansas, but started thinking about how he would eventually die just like everyone else"

"Livgren was under pressure to write a follow-up to the group's hit, "Carry on Wayward Son." While playing his acoustic guitar exercises, his wife suggested that putting lyrics to the patterns would yield his hit song. They are still married"

The slow, acoustic sound was not typical of Kansas, who's previous singles included "Carry On My Wayward Son" and "Point of Know Return."

"The band was almost done with the album when Livgren played this for them. He didn't want to use it, because it was not typical of their sound, but the band insisted they record it, and it became their biggest hit"

"This was the second big hit for Kansas, following "Carry On My Wayward Son." With 2 hits under their belt, they were able to headline arena-rock shows into the late '70s"
